From her stick-out-like-a-sore-thumb surname to her myriad interests, nothing about Lekha
Washington is conventional. She’s possessed by
an incurable love for acting, though.
Lekha started off as a sculptor, studied lifestyle product design and art history, and finally graduated in Film Direction from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. She made short films in places like Burma and Mauritius, but couldn’t survive too long not being in front of a camera.
Involved in performing arts for many years, Lekha directed her theatre skills to television. She talked her way through Travel, call-in shows, The IPL and international cricket on Sony, ESPN, SS music and a host of international channels.
She finally got her opportunity to act on the big screen in her first Tamil film Jeyam Kondaan. It earned her accolades for her performance, and was a commercial hit as well, running for more than a 100 days at the cinema.
In 2009, she broke into Bollywood, acting opposite Rajiv Khandelwal in UTV Spotboy’s Peter Gaya Kaam Se, a racy thriller set in Goa. It is scheduled for release in
Her first film in Telugu – Vedam, directed by multiple award winner Krish and starring Allu Arjun, Manoj and Manoj Vajpayee,
was both commercially and critically acclaimed.
Her tamil film, 'Va' directed by Pushkar and
Gayatri had her playing a suicidal nineteen
year old schoolgirl.
She is currently
shooting as lead lady opposite Ajay Devgn in
Power, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Power
has Amitabh Bacchan playing her father and
Anil Kapoor of Slumdog Millionaire as the bad
her pursuit of art with her next exhibition
slated for June '11.
